I had the pleasure of working with Dr. Gilcher from 1982-1995. During that time the AIDS crisis came to light and Dr. Gilcher led us with grace, knowledge and dignity. One of the things he did was to allow a social worker Averil “Cookie” Arbuckle to use our computer system to write a book called “Aids for AIDS”. This resource guide was to help those infected with AIDS to have much needed information and resource information (in the days long before GOOGLE). Averil was awarded a “5 Who Care” award. The photos attached are from the dinner when she received this award. I was honored to be asked to attend the dinner, and even more so to be in the presence of greatness all around.
Cookie later went on to create Other Options in Oklahoma City which continues to run to this day by her daughter Mary Arbuckle.
Dr. Gilcher opened the door to make this possible. He could have just as easily said no. But he felt the work was worthy and worthwhile. It’s one of the many accomplishments he has had. He touched lives that touched more lives.
He opened doors for me by allowing me to grow. Never once did he try to hold me back. He was always there to help when you asked.
This is a huge loss to those of us who cared for him and looked up to him.
