Dr. Gilcher is one of the reasons my family and I were able to make a solid life in the US. We emigrated from Afghanistan to the US in the early 80s, when the Russians invaded. I was a doctor there and wanted a job in the medical field but spoke no English so it was very difficult for me to find something. We met Dr. Gilcher in late 1983 at the Oklahoma Blood Institute, he took a chance on me and gave me a job because of my past experience. I worked there for over 30 years and he was the best boss I’ve ever had.
When my daughter got sick when she was young and nothing else worked, I asked Dr. Gilcher if he could see her, he kindly said yes and when her blood was taken, with him, she didn’t cry. She very quickly got better and has kept in touch with him over the years.
In late 2007 I was diagnosed with prostate cancer and I had severe complications with my surgery. Dr. Gilcher was my advisor, my doctor and my friend through this difficult time. He helped me more than he ever knew.
In general, I couldn’t have made it without him – with life decisions, financial decisions, personal decisions – everything. He was one of the truest friends I will ever have. I will miss him dearly at our dinner table and in life – he always ate a ton and wanted more – and that made us so happy! Rest in peace Dr. Gilcher.
